Well hello everyone! I've just got through reading 13 pages of the forum and was shocked and upset to hear what's been happening in my absence!! I had no idea that things had got so bad and that Mr. Farmer was thinking of shutting the forum down!! I read the diary entries last night late, and there was no mention of stopping it on there, but I noticed the gallery pages of photos have not been updated so just assumed that he was too busy with his real job to post new ones. I hope that now the forum is getting lively again that we can convince everyone to post regularly and keep it open! Welcome to the new posters too - and some of the old faces returning (no offence to "old" lol) I agree with everyone's sentiments - we are all friends on here and some of us have been here for several years and would miss it greatly if it was to cease. I hope whatever it was that perpetrated Mr. Farmer's initial decision to close this forum has been resolved and forgotten now, and that we can get back to normal - whatever that is!

Having said that - I have been tearing my hair out for the past two weeks not having any internet access - Yes Karen and Mary Lland. thankyou for remembering I was away for 2 weeks and had not just deserted you all!!! Needless to say I missed all the excitement of the ospreys fledging, and the geese flying off, and the plight of that poor black swan trying to fly off, and the owlets being ringed, those poor chickens, Thornton's exploits, and everything else - I was getting withdrawal symptoms!!

But apart from that, I had a wonderful time at Dungeness. We had glorious weather too which was a bonus for the East Kent coast! Our special birds this year were a pair of Purple Herons that are nesting here for the first time in the UK - there had been a 24-hour watch on the nest up until a few weeks ago, and then a daily watch was set up and by the time I got there it was just a weekend watch, which I was lucky enough to be involved in. It meant I was at the best sight-point, set up with telescopes etc. and just waching the nest area to see when and how often the adult birds flew off to feed, and bring back a crop-full of fish to feed their chicks. Of course we didn't (and still don't) know how many there are, and won't do until they fledge and we can see them as they try out their wings for the first time, as we can't and will not disturb the birds by getting too close so we watch from afar. It was a fantastic sight though seeing the adults fly overhead - they are a little smaller than the Grey Heron and more of a brownish-purple colour and their necks are very sinuous and striped with yellow - an absolute joy to see!

Also, on my middle weekend, we had a visit from another strange and rare bird - a white tailed lapwing (or plover as its also called) that should by rights be in Iraq and Iran!! Somehow this little bird with its very long yellow legs, has come over here and has been sighted in a few places in the UK from Merseyside, to Slimbridge, to Essex and now Kent, staying about 2 days at each place, but we were lucky enough to have it for a week! I don't know if its still there but it certainly was on Saturday! The birding world was buzzing with the news and we had hundreds of extra visitors coming from all over the country - and Belgium and France - to see these rarities - it was very exciting! So on the reserve we had 5 of the heron family - Purple Heron, Grey Heron, Bittern, Great White Egret and Little Egret - and most days I was lucky enough to see all five! Of course there were all the other bird species to watch, and my daily bird count was usually over 20 species, and some days up to 30!!

Gosh I've gone on a long time - I will stop now for a breather and a bite of lunch, and maybe post again tomorrow some more of my exploits. Keep posting everyone, and lets keep this forum open! As long as Mr. Farmer can see how much we appreciate it and are grateful for his input, hopefully we can stay to exchange news and views for a long time to come!..... till later - ttfn, Jill

Does anyone know if Mr Farmer had any success with the emu eggs. I know that he had problems with a power cut but just wondered if he was able to save any. There is a lot of screeching going on in the osprey nest but one one of the chicks seems to be having a good feed so I dont know what the problem is. We have had a nice day today with no rain but the forecast is not too good, however as Mr Farmer knows they dont usually get it right so we will wait and see what comes along weatherwise. Val Perth

Well Vicky i hope your enjoying your stay of course you are silly me, i am wishing you luck with the kingfisher shot.
Sue Notts hope the weather stayed OK for you today its rained here off and on but been very close but cooler tonight, its picking up tomorrow here they recon fingers crossed for that one. I have had nothing but bad liuck in the garden front this year i had the promise of fencing to be put up but its come to a stand still at the moment so the dogs are treading mud in every time it rains Cleo is blind now so when she goes for her wee, she mimics a bee dance till she finds the spot she wants hence well covered on mud i stand ready with he mop as she insists on carrying on the bee dance all over the kitchen floor. Then my hedge shears were blunt it really annoyed me that did as i had to stop half way through so i went buy some others, only for them to break as i was using them the blades just locked on me so i have to take them back when i get a lift. I am not so much bothered about my own hedges its Arthur next door he has only one leg now and in his eighties and i like to keep his garden neat for him out of respect. He was a good well the best gardener for miles round here in his day he knows all the Latin names hes forgotten more than i have learnt i bet.
But it goes wrong for me i can tell you, i rant quite a lot as you can well imagine. I am going on me knees praying before i plug the lawn mower in lol.

Rosie`s Mum in Toronto what very sad news your post delivered about the Bald Eagle, isn't it heart breaking when things like this happen so sad.

Sad to hear that Phoenix, a young bald eagle in Hornby, British Columbia has died from an infectious disease. This nest lost another younger in the last year or so. Hopefully the parents will return and 2011 season will be better for them. A climber, with government permission, climbed the tree to remove the body and further information on the disease will be available soon. Rosie's Mum in Toronto

well it dorsnt look so windy in lol as it does in denbury this morning. and once agagin we have got rain. I hope this will not affect the number of people who support cancer research each year at the race for life. Picnic looks as if it will be eaten in car but never mind. Its only once a year and all for a good cause. Elsie lovely to hear from you again. All three owls present and correct this morning. Well I will have to get on as we are out by 9 15 and still got sandwhiches to make. Have a good day everyone whatever you are doing take care. Sue. N Notts.

Vicky I do hope you enjoy your visit to Denbury. I think that we have a Maxi Midi and Mini again this year with the owlets. I also think that Maxi is the one who insists on venturing out of the nest box, but am I also correct in thinking that last year the owlets waited until they had more of their adult feathers before venturing out. I am so happy that all is well with the young ospreys, we have had terrible weather lately with high winds and heavy rain but they have survived. I still have my blackbird family here, I had thought that they would have left when I was away for a few days but thankfully they are still here. I also have lots of dunnocks this year which is good as I started with only 2 a few years ago, however it only takes 2 to start a family. Val Perth

Hello Everyone
Just been watching the owlets. All three screeching for food (rather like the young ospreys recently), then one decided to jump up to the opening at the back. The biggest one then turned round and stared briefly through the 'window' through which we watch them, then flew at it, obviously thinking it was a way out. Do hope it didn't hurt itself too much. So glad to read that Mabel caught herself 4 fish ,at least she will be able to feed herself on the migration, I am dreading it .My daughter in yorkshire has got withdrawal symptons because her modem in down, she has been trying to catch up with the ospreys on the school computer where she helps out , but also going into the local library .She may have to wait until end of month before its fixed but by then she will be in cornwall with us so can catch up then .It gets us all hooked doesnt it she says its the first thing she looks at when she gets up in morning oh well .pauline Fraddon Cornwall

Well I have to say how nice it is to have some of our old friends back on the forum. lovely to hear from you all again. Have just been watching one of the young Osprey chicks flying round the loch, what beautiful birds in flight. I haven't seen the Kingfisher at all up to now, saw it a few times last year, especially on one occasion when Mr Farmer zoomed right in to it, beautiful bird. Isn't this awful weather for July. I hope we are not having another summer like last year, it has been really cold here, unbievable really. It seems my garden is a haunt for Wood Pigeons and Collered Doves as I no sooner put food out for the other birds that they are there, I am sure they sit some where watching me. Have a good weekend everyone. Elsie
